Tinubu’s mother is dead

President-General of the Association of Nigerian Market Women and Men, Alhaja Abibat Mogaji died yesterday evening in her home in Ikeja, Lagos. Read more


In a statement announcing her death, the family said that she would be buried today at  the Ikoyi Vaults and Gardens in Lagos, at 11 a.m.
In her lifetime, the highly respected market leader and mother of National Leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, dispensed charity to all and sundry.
For her acknowledged role in women empowerment, Alhaja Mogaji was among five eminent women honoured at the 2002 National Women Conference held in Lagos.
More recently, on November 24, 2012, she was conferred the Degree of Doctor of Human Letters (D.H.L) Honoris Causa by Ahmadu Bello University at a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the institution, during which the former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida and former Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen. Theophilus were also honoured.
It is noteworthy that the notice of the conferment of the award signed by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha said that it was in recognition of her sterling qualities, exemplary character and contribution to human development in all fields of human endeavour.
Alhaja Mogaji has been honoured with no fewer than 10 titles by various traditional rulers and interest groups across the nation. Some of such titles include Iya Adinni of Yaya Abatan Central Mosque, Ogba-Agege, Yeye Oba of Ikirun Land, Yeye Oba of Kweme Kingdom, Badagry, Yeye Oba of Osolu Kingdom, Yeye Oba of Lagos to mention but a few.
She also won several awards from organisations such as Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency, National Council of Women Society, Eko Award 1991, National Youth Organisation, Law Ladies Forum, University of Lagos amongst others. An on account of her humanitarian services, she was bestowed with matronship of many organisations like Nigeria Red Cross, Nigeria Youth Organisation, National Union of Lagos Students, Nigerian Society for the Handicapped and Egbe Omo Eko.
