•We’ve seen God at work, says Acting governor

Ailing Taraba State Governor, DanbabaSuntai, will today celebrate his 52nd birthday in the Sea View Hospital Rehabilitation Centre and Home, New York United States of America, where he is recuperating.

Supporters of Mandela brave cold for all-night vigil

The crowd of well-wishers outside former President Nelson Mandela’s Pretoria hospital continues to grow as the health condition of the global statesman is said to be improving but still in “critical condition’’’. Read more
On Thursday, 15 buses filled with supporters arrived at the Mediclinic Heart Hospital.
Throughout the night, crowds of people from all over the country were singing and praying in spite of the bitterly
cold winter weather.
They were given a glimmer of hope on Thursday when President Jacob Zuma who cancelled a trip to Mozambique to remain close, said there had been an improvement in his condition and that he remained in critical but stable condition.
Relatives concurred with this, saying he was “responding to touch and attempting to open his eyes”.
In spite of all the goodwill, Mandela’s eldest daughter Makaziwe Mandela on Thursday expressed her outrage at the
media frenzy around her father, describing journalists reporting on her father’s deteriorating health conditions as “vultures”.
“It’s like vultures waiting when a lion has devoured a buffalo, waiting there you know for the last carcasses, that’s the image that we have as a family,’’ she said in an interview with the state broadcaster.
She added that journalists who were camped outside her father’s Pretoria hospital and childhood village in the Eastern Cape “violate all boundaries”.

Student, who gave birth in toilet, names baby

THE baby delivered in the toilet of Moremi Hostel by a 400-level student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Oyinlola Rotimi, has been named Nifemi, Okikiola.
Rotimi, who gave birth last Tuesday, was initially accused of attempting to flush her baby boy down the septic tank.
But it was later learnt that Rotimi, who was inexperienced in child bearing, thought she had a stomach upset when she was actually in labour.
The 22-year-old mother, studying Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, had told our correspondent that the circumstances that surrounded the delivery of her baby made her “a celebrity.”
She expressed delight with the birth of the baby, describing her experience as “unforgettable”.
When asked how soon she would have another baby, she said, “not so soon,”
It was gathered that the naming of the baby was low-key due to the examination going on in the school.
One of Rotimi’s friends, who spoke on condition of anonymity on Wednesday night, said Rotimi was “extremely happy” at the naming.
She said, “Today(Wednesday) is one of the days I have seen my friend looking so happy, she is extremely joyous. Although, this is not the actual way we planned it. We should have celebrated more than this if not for the fact that examination is ongoing.
“Most of our colleagues are taking exam and that is the major reason for the small celebration. I am hopeful that when the baby clocks one, we will celebrate it in a bigger way because he is our boy.”
However, some OAU students, who were not at the naming of the baby earlier, created their own fun by organising another ceremony, where they named the baby after the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Bamitale Omole.
The students, who gathered around 10pm on Wednesday, appointed a pastor among them to coordinate the christening.
Among the names the students gave the baby are Oriyomi, Omomoremi, Oluwanimilo, Titilayo, Eniolorunopa, Bamitale Omole.
The father of the baby, a 400-level student of Engineering in OAU, Oyewole Samuel, however, rebuffed attempts by PUNCH Metro to chat with him.
But one of his friends, who pleaded anonymity, explained that the father was not happy with the controversy that surrounded the birth of his baby.
He said, “He does not like the controversy and the noise about the birth of the baby. He is a cool person and does not like publicity.”

Banker arrested for armed robbery in Kano

A banker with one of the new generation banks in Kano State, (names withheld), has been arrested by the Nigeria Police Force, Kano State Command, on charges of criminal conspiracy and armed robbery.
The suspect was arrested after he had allegedly conspired with another suspect, who is currently at large, to rob a customer of his bank of N4,755,200.00K on June 17, 2013, along Zaria Road in the state capital.
Speaking on the incident, during a press conference held yesterday, Kano State Police Commissioner, Alhaji Musa Daura, explained that the suspects had armed themselves with a pistol and a knife with which they attacked the customer on his way to the bank to deposit the money.
The police said following the robbery, the suspects were vigorously pursued by the members of the community, alongside the security officers within range and were eventually arrested with the stolen money still in their procession.
He disclosed that the revolver pistol loaded with three live ammunition and a knife were recovered from the suspect upon his arrest, while adding that efforts were being made to arrest the other fleeing suspect.
Meanwhile, the police in the state have announced the arrest of 273 armed robbery suspects in the state since the beginning of the year, adding that a total of 3241 criminal suspects were arrested in the state within the same period.
In the mid year breakdown of arrests made, the police said 52 cases of armed robbery were reported to them by the members of the public, adding that they recovered 30 motor vehicles, 98 GSM, gold and jewelries, clothing materials and house breaking implements.
Other exhibits recovered within the same period, according to the police, included cutlasses, swords, sticks, pumping machines, electric generators, 6300 counterfeit notes among others.

Residents flee as hoodlums attack village, kill one

The people of Ikeshin village in Ota area of Ogun state have fled their residences after some hoodlums unleashed mayhem and killed one Alhaji Idowu Arinadegbo. Read more
PUNCH Metro learnt that Arinodegbo was working on some plots of land he had bought in the area with some workers when the hoodlums ambushed them and began to shoot sporadically at them.
In the ensuing confusion, Arinodegbo was said to have been hit on the chest, while the others escaped with bullet wounds.
A resident of Onigbin, which is a neighbouring village, told Punch Metro, that the people in Ikeshin ran to them for safety as the gunshots increased.
The source, who pleaded anonymity, said, “On Saturday afternoon, there were sounds of gun shots and we all started panicking. We started seeing people scampering for safety. They came to take cover in our area.
“While in Church the following day, people went to search for Arinodegbo. They came back around 12pm with his corpse.”
He said the incident made many of the people who were living in the area to vacate their homes for fear of being killed.
However, Mr. Nojeem Obileye, a chief and member of the Gbolaya family, a major land owner in the area, said the incident was the climax of a series of attack perpetrated by a traditional ruler in the area, Oba Fatai Matanmi.
He said, “This all started in September 20, 2011. The oba and a surveyor started harassing everybody with thugs.
“The thugs are now powerful and they are now entering into other people’s plot of land to cause trouble.
“That fateful Saturday, some people came to lay the foundation for their house. But unknown to them, the thugs had hidden in the bush. It was from there they started shooting the people. Some of the victims could not even see where the bullets were coming from.
“Unfortunately, Idowu Arinodegbo whom I was told bought about four acres of land was there to clear his land with some of his workers. The bullet hit him in the chest and he died. Some of the people there also sustained bullet injuries.”
When contacted, Oba Matanmi denied the allegations.
He said, “I don’t know anything about it, and I don’t have any thugs. If there is any thug, they are not from me.  For anything pertaining to land, I use courts.
“The people who are trying  to implicate me are those who don’t like my face and they are members of my family. The last time I was around that area in question was 30 years ago.”
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident.
He said the police went with the family to recover the corpse.
He said, “From what the police heard, the deceased went to his land on June 22. There was a report to the police that he was missing. The next day, his corpse was seen somewhere and later taken to the mortuary.”
Adejobi said one Babalola Tajudeen had been arrested, adding that investigations were still on.

Prince Jackson: Conrad Murray told us ' Sorry kids, dad's dead'

Prince Jackson just testified ... Dr. Conrad Murray informed them of Michael Jackson's passing by glibly announcing, "Sorry kids. Dad's dead."

Prince has taken the stand in the Jackson family's wrongful death lawsuit against AEG, saying all he and his siblings could do was cry after hearing the news.

He said Paris was hit the hardest by her dad's death, screaming that she "wanted her daddy" while Murray was trying to resuscitate him.

Prince said, "She was my dad's princess. She definitely is dealing with [his death] in her own way."

As we reported, Paris has sunken into a deep and dangerous depression recently, stemming from her father and his death.

"I have 8 to 10 weeks left to get the transplant done-OJB Jezreel

OJB Jezreel gave an interview to Encomium magazine on Monday June 24th where he said he has about eight weeks left to get his operation done. Excerpts...
"When early diagnosis was done, it was just a case of renal failure. Right now, my two kidneys are gone. We are running dialysis at the moment. It started two years ago, but gradually depreciated. Most people tend to attribute kidney problem to drinking and smoking. I was told it doesn't have anything to do with that, because as much as I drink and smoke then, it was casual drinking. Maybe they offer you a bottle of drink and all that but not like I drink 15 bottles a day. I have a friend who has gone through this and he never drank or smoked.
"The whole process of the treatment from pre-process, transplanting process and post-transplanting will cost about $100, 000. In two years I have spent up to N5million which I have been trying to maintain myself. That is why it has been kept secret."
"God willing, I have like eight to ten weeks more to get the transplant done. It's strange, I still walk around a little. I can't eat much though. I trust God and Nigerians for their financial support"
