Lagos Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola has said the state
government would rebuild the burnt spare parts market gutted by fire on Sunday
night at Olodi-Apapa Area of the state. Read more
Fashola, who disclosed this when he inspected the market to
assess the level of damage said the state government would assist the traders
to build a more organized, safer market.
He said: “The rebuilding process would be a synergy between
the traders and the government.”
The governor was received in the market by traders who
brandished placards with various inscriptions and solicited the assistance of
the state government to rebuild their burnt shops. He assured that the process
of rebuilding the market would be rapid.
Fashola, who was conducted round the market by the
Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr. Wale Ahmed and the Chairman of the Zone E
plaza of the market, Mr. Mike Ekeobi said the state government would start work
immediately.
“Those who
still have goods within the market should remove it now. We will move our
experts here to take the drawing and commence construction work immediately,”
he added.
He charged market and warehouse operators in the state to
insure their businesses to avoid suffering loss whenever such unforeseen
disasters occurred.
According to him: “It is only the building that can return,
but the goods will not. I use this opportunity to appeal to all markets and
warehouses owners to use insurance companies to insure their businesses,
stocks, stock-in-trade and inventory of goods. This is what insurance is meant
to do for us.
“If there were
insurance in place, the people would have been talking to the insurance
companies instead of the government.”
