Police Commissioner, Umar Shehu, who confirmed the incident
at the end of a meeting between Tiv/Agatu farmers and Fulani herdsmen in the
local government, called on the people of the area to live in peace with one
another for the overall development of the state and the country.
Shehu, who also confirmed the loss of property worth
millions of naira said the situation had been put under control, saying the
security agents would not condone any breakdown of law and order by any person
no matter his or her status
He appealed to the people of the area to go about their
normal businesses and to report anybody who might want to cause trouble in the
area to the law enforcement agents for appropriate action. Also speaking, the
Andoma of Doma, Alhaji Ahmadu Aliyu Oga Onawo, who expressed his disappointment
on the incident, said meetings had been held with various community leaders
with a view to finding a lasting solution to the crises.
The royal father, who earlier met other traditional and
community leaders in the area further appealed to them to embrace peace in the
best interest of their communities.
He said government had already taken a step with a view to
tackling the crises between the farmers and the herdsmen hence the need to live
in peace and harmony with one another in their best interest.
Speaking with Daily Sun on the incident, some of the
residents in the area attributed the crises to the invasion of the their lands
by people from the neighbouring states as well as lack of proper grazing land
for the Fulani herdsmen.
They, therefore, appealed to the state government to as a
matter of urgency demarcate boundaries between Nasarawa and its neighbouring
states as well as establish grazing reserves for the Fulani herdsmen in the
area. As at the time of filing this report, people were seen in their hundreds
leaving their villages for fear of further attacks.
