The gunmen were said to have invaded Government Secondary School along Gashua road at about 9.15pm, shooting sporadically.
They also headed for the teachers’ quarters and killed two of the teachers. Apart from the 11 killed, three soldiers were critically injured in another clash with JTF, which lasted about five hours, a source said. He disclosed that three of the insurgents were arrested by JTF and “are presently in custody.”
Chief Medical Officer of the State’s Specialist Hospital, Dr. Salem M. Umar said 11 corpses were brought to the hospital. Among the corpses, according to him were seven boys identified as students of the GSS Damaturu, two teachers of the school and two others identified as members of the suspected Boko Haram.
Umar also stated that six students that sustained various degrees of injuries were brought to the hospital and “are currently receiving treatment.”
Three of the surviving students, Mohammed Ya’u (SS3), Abdulkadir Mohammed (SS2) and Goni Abubakar (SS1) told journalists that the insurgents “stormed their hostels few minutes after 9p.m on Sunday and started shooting sporadically.” adding that “they (students) jumped out through the windows and doors of the hostels.”
They also said the insurgents forced some students to direct them to the teachers’ quarters where another round of gunshots were heard.
“Two teachers were killed thereafter,” a military source stated. With the Sunday attack, the 9p.m to 6a.m curfew initially imposed on Damaturu has been brought back to 6p.m to 6a.m even as security forces intensified checks and surveillance in the state capital .
