From FRED ITUA, Abuja
After weeks of hide and seek game, the
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday quizzed former
governor of Kwara State, now Senator Bukola Saraki over alleged fraud
while in office and as executive director in the defunct Societe
Generale Bank of Nigeria (SGBN). Read more
Confirming Saraki’s presence at the commission’s headquarters, the
spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren said the senator, representing Kwara Central,
reported at the EFCC in the early hours of yesterday.
“He came to the commission in the early hours of today (yesterday).
He reported here on his own. He has made a statement and is talking to
our team of interrogators,” Uwujaren said.
Daily Sun, however, gathered that the former governor had been released.
Clearing the air on why it took the commission over two years to
investigate Saraki’s tenure in office as governor, Uwujaren said:
“Investigation is not time-bound. It is when you are sure of what you
have before you that can effect any arrest or invite an accused person.”
He said Saraki’s arrest had no political undertone. “EFCC is an
agency of the Federal Government. We are not affiliated to any political
party and our operations are non-partisan. I can tell you that this
case has nothing to do with politics. We are working based on the
evidences we had gathered,” Uwujaren argued.
EFCC had vowed a fortnight ago that the commission would use every
means possible under the law to compel Saraki to appear before it after
his denial of ever receiving any letter of invitation from the
anti-graft agency.
Uwujaren had told Daily Sun that Senator Saraki was invited through
the Office of the Clerk of the National Assembly by a letter dated July
25, 2015, noting that Saraki was to report at Idiagbon House by 10am on
Wednesday July 31, but did not honour the invitation.
“The senator has eight major matters pending before the EFCC and the
commission will use all means within the ambit of the law to compel him
to honour the invitation,” he said.
