The police in Lagos on Wednesday arraigned a member of the Oodua People’s Congress, Ismaila Ramon, before the Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court for the alleged murder of a socialite, Alhaji Abdulkarimu Kadiri. Read more
PUNCH Metro had reported on Monday that the 72-year-old was killed during a gun salute at a Ramadan event.
The incident occurred at the Ijora Badia area of Lagos where the accused was said to be guarding a secondary school.
The suspect had reportedly fired some shots in the air before things went wrong and a bullet hit Kadiri in error.
The bullet was said to have hit the socialite in the head, killing him on the spot.
The charge read, “That you, Ismaila Ramon,m, on the 4th day of August, 2013 at about 1900hrs, at Gaskiya College, Ijora Bardia, Lagos in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully cause the death of one Alhaji Abdulkarimu Kadiri, m, aged 72 years, by shooting him with a gun on his head and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 222 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.”
The defendant’s plea was not taken.
The prosecutor, Inspector Richard Odige, applied that the suspect be remanded in prison to enable the police conclude investigations and forward the case file for advice from the office of the state’s Directorate of Public Prosecution.
The Magistrate, Ms. S.O Solebo said, “In line with section 263 of the Administration of Criminal Justice of Lagos State, the defendant is remanded for a period of 30 days pending the advice from the DPP’s office.”
The matter was adjourned till September 23.
