This is even just as security operatives in Yenagoa, the state capital, have arrested five suspects in connection with the killing of two people along Bay-Bridge Road.
An eyewitness said the pirates, numbering five, and armed with sophisticated weapons, intercepted the boat at Kilometre 46 and shot indiscriminately, killing three people on the spot, while the boat driver was badly injured.
The same gang was said to have after the first attack, intercepted another boat and robbed one of the passengers of his N1.5 million and stole the engine of the passenger boat.
The attack has forced the people of Nembe to raise the alarm over their safety in the waterways while appealing to the security agencies to assist them.
One of the top officials of the Nembe LGA and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP), who doesn’t want to be named, said incessant attacks by pirates have terrified travellers along the Nembe waterways.
The state police spokesman, Alex Akhigbe, who said the command heard about the incident, however, noted that the location was not within their jurisdiction.
Meanwhile, a top security source in the state government has confirmed the arrest of five people in connection with the shooting and killing of two boys along the Bay- Bridge Road.
The boys, identified as ex-militants, belonged to the second and third phases of the Federal Government’s amnesty scheme. They were allegedly involved in a fracas which snowballed into shooting leading to their demise.
Investigations revealed that the state’s “Operation Doo Akpo” and other security operatives were informed. They arrested five people.
The five are in the custody of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
