The suspect, described as a member of the family, had descended on Pa Adigun when others in the family had gone to observe the Tarawhi prayer on Tuesday night, thus turning the Ramadan fasting to a disaster for the family.
Mutiu, it was gathered, had earlier eaten the food prepared for the family head before the alleged act.
Family members of Pa Adigun, a visually impaired old man, according to an eyewitness, prevailed upon him to observe Tarawhi prayer at home while other family members went to a nearby mosque.
The attention of the neighbours and worshippers at the mosque was however drawn to the noise from Pa Adigun’s room as a young boy shouted the suspect’s name continuously while he was carrying out the act.
It was gathered that Pa Adigun was found rolling on the ground in the pool of his own blood when people got to the scene.
The victim, who had a damaged jaw in the process, was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital where he was later referred to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan for proper treatment, but gave up the ghost on the way.
Speaking with Daily Sun, a family member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “Baba (Pa Adigun) was at home while we all went to the mosque for Tarawhi prayer at the mosque because Baba was just recovering from a sight problem. We wanted to avoid going around with him in the night. We just heard one of the boys shouting Mutiu’s name but because of the prayer, people told the boy to keep quiet but he continued. Then, we were forced to listen to him and followed him into Baba’s room. It was when we got there that we saw him lying helplessly on the ground in a pool of his blood. The boy later informed us that he saw Mutiu hitting Baba with two long woods.
“The boy, whose house was beside the victim’s house, had refused to follow his parents to the mosque and was walking about when he suddenly saw Mutiu attacking the old man.”
The suspect was said to have after the wicked act ran out of luck at about 7.20am yesterday, when he came to pick his dog.
He was arrested by family members and handed over to the police at the Divisional Headquarters, Moniya, Ibadan.
Source told Daily Sun that he had been a thorn in the flesh of family members as he had been seen on many occasions with dangerous weapons.
It was also gathered that Mutiu had told the old man to give him money to buy food because he was hungry but the victim told him he had no money.
