4 AIGs, 17 commissioners, others face trial for indiscipline

Among those to face the Force Disciplinary Committee sitting at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, are four assistant inspectors generals of police (AIG), 17 commissioners of police (CP), two deputy commissioners of police (DC), six assistant commissioners of police, chief superintendent of police and assistant superintendent of police, among others.

If found guilty, the affected officers face the risk of dismissal and prosecution, reduction in rank, severe reprimand, or exoneration, if found not guilty.

Briefing newsmen shortly before commencing the trial of the affected officers, Chairman of the committee, Suleiman Fakai, who is also the deputy inspector general of police in charge of administration, said the committee which was set up sometime last year, had prosecuted over 3, 000, cases it inherited and promised to conclude the trial of the 195 accused officers by the end of the week.

He said his committee was charged with the responsibilities to review disciplinary matters involving senior officers from the ranks of ASP and above who may have erred in the course of their duties and make appropriate recommendation to the Police Service Commission.

According to him, the committee meets fortnightly and holds emergency sittings when the situation demands to ensure that disciplinary matters are speedily dispensed.

He further stated that the committed had so far dismissed one commissioner of police, one assistant commissioner of police, one CSP, two superintendent of police, one DSP, eight ASPs and retired two CSP, one SP, and 13 ASPs, while one DSP, three CSPs, seven SPs and 10 ASPs had their ranks reduced.
