The public outrage ignited by the
behaviour of Nigeria’s female representative in the ongoing Big Brother
Africa reality show, Beverly Osu, is far from being over. Read more
Beverly has been severely criticised for
allegedly having sex with South African housemate, Angelo Collins, in a
bathtub on Friday.
There were widespread reactions on
social media as a three-minute video clip showing a naked Beverly lying
atop Angelo in the bathtub went viral on the Internet.
Nigerian viewers of the reality show,
who are still sore with the young woman for her role in the sordid
drama, however, seem to have transferred their anger to popular on-air
personality, Denrele Edun.
Denrele has come under intense criticism
for allegedly using his position as a presenter on Channel O to get
Beverly on the BBA Chase rather than giving better qualified and decent
Nigerian girls the opportunity.
To this end, the aggrieved followers of
the show have pelted Denrele with messages on Twitter, blaming him for
Beverly’s behaviour, which they insisted, had wrongly portrayed Nigerian
women as immoral.
Those who argued that Beverly emerged
the first Nigerian BBA housemate to openly indulge in sexual
intercourse, since the inception of the show, have also alleged that
Denrele’s special interest in choosing the female representatives of
Nigeria in the MNET-sponsored show had resulted in a huge
embarrassment for the entire country.
One MZ Fab in a tweet to Denrele said,
“Denrele Edun! What has Nigeria done to you that you sent your
god-daughter to disgrace us? So, you didn’t teach her morals.’’
Some users of the micro-blogging service
pointed out that Denrele should have carried out a proper check on the
background of Beverly before throwing his weight behind her.
Also, Nyoh Eddy tweeted, “I’m really
disappointed in you, Denrele Edun. You knew Beverly, but you went ahead
to recommend her to represent your own country, Nigeria.’’
Another Twitter user, tweeting via
@defiwa, encouraged other aggrieved Nigerians on the social network to
hold Denrele accountable for Beverly’s actions. “I wouldn’t really blame
anyone for insulting Denrele Edun because of Bevrely’s obnoxious
actions. He has been forming voltron for her all this while. So he
should enjoy the shitty side.’’
An enraged Kazeem Musa tweeted, “You (Denrele) had better call your friend and tell her to stop embarrassing the nation.’’
Accusing Denrele of bringing ridicule
upon Nigerians, Atta Abraham pleaded with him not to give anybody whose
behaviour is similar to that of Beverly a chance to participate in BBA
in the future.
But in spite of the bombardment on his
Twitter handle, Denrele has refrained from responding to his critics.
Instead, he has simply restricted himself to re-tweeting the same
messages.
Meanwhile, some of his friends have
risen in support of him and vowed to confront those attacking him on the
social network. According to them, it is pointless blaming him for
Beverly’s actions since she is an adult herself and capable of making
independent decisions.
They argued that even if Denrele had
influenced Beverly’s participation in the BBA reality show, it doesn’t
mean that he should be held responsible for her actions.
“Nigerians should blame Beverly for her
actions and leave Denrele out of it. Come to think of it, Beverly is an
adult and has the right to live her life!’’ Beautiful Onyinye wrote on
her Twitter handle.
Another fellow, Josh Obi, rose in
defence of Denrele. He said, “The fact that he helped Beverly fill out
her form doesn’t mean he sent her to mess up. Come on people the guy
just did a good deed.”
For Zubbie Osuigwe, Denrele is blameless
in the matter because giving assistance to “someone looking for job to
secure an interview does not make one liable for the person’s future
actions.’’
Commenting on lailasblog.com,
Oluyomi Odukoya said, “Denrele isn’t Beverly’s parents. Why should he be
held responsible? Karen Igho and Goldie attended the show, did they
disgrace us? No! Beverly is on her own abeg.’’
