Plateau State Government has assured that the local government election scheduled for December 7 will go on as planed despite the pockets of killings recorded in some parts of the state. The assurance came on the heels of the killing of three people by gunmen on Tuesday evening. Read more
State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Pastor Yiljab Abraham had, at a press briefing, confirmed that in Gyel, Jos South Local Government Area, a man and his two children were killed by gunmen while his wife, who was injured was receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.
He, however, said seven people had so far been arrested in connection with the recent attacks in the state.
He said despite the re-occurrence of pockets of attacks, the state was not facing any eminent crisis or attack, insisting that the three cases which occurred within the last one week were isolated cases already being dealt with by security agencies.
He said security agents were on the trail of others for interrogation on their roles in the crimes committed.
Yiljap appealed to the people of the state not to panic, saying the state was not going back to the dark days of bloodshed or gloom and fear.
“Plateau State is in a post conflict/crisis era and we are only going to strengthen the peace that we have and we will not go back. We should increase our level of alertness and realize that no matter how many hundreds or thousands of security agents we have, they will not be sufficient to protect every family,” he stated.
Speaking on the election, the information commissioner said from the security reports the government had received and from independent study carried out on every local government and ward in the state, the government was better informed on the expectation of the people and was aware that every local government area was interested in an election at the grassroots.
He assured that the election would go on in every local government area of the state without exception and that government would not interfere with the conduct; as all the parties would have equal access to their needs in relation to the election.
He appealed that anyone with grievances should seek redress through constituted authority instead of taking laws into his or her hands.
To have a credible election, he said the state government had taken steps to reposition the state independent electoral commission by reviewing the law establishing it and producing it in a
Gazette.
